Founded by Practitioners

Spark-oak began in 2009 when a group of working cinematographers recognised a gap in practical training options. Traditional film schools offered theory, but lacked the hands-on approach that actually prepares people for professional work.

We built something different: a training environment where every session puts cameras in your hands, where instructors share real-world challenges they faced last month, and where the curriculum evolves alongside industry standards.

Today, our alumni work on productions across the UK and internationally, from BBC documentaries to independent features and high-profile commercial campaigns.

Our Teaching Philosophy

We believe that exceptional cinematography combines technical mastery with creative intuition. Our programmes balance both, ensuring you understand not just how to operate equipment, but why certain choices create specific emotional responses in viewers. Theory without practice produces hesitant operators; practice without theory produces limited ones.

Small Groups, Individual Attention

Every participant has different strengths and areas for development. By maintaining small group sizes—typically six to eight people—we ensure instructors can provide meaningful individual feedback throughout each session.

This approach also means more hands-on time with equipment. Rather than watching demonstrations while waiting for your turn, you are actively operating cameras and working through scenarios.
